Our team, reefs4life, consists of 3 passionate primary 6 members. (Look up). We come from the one, the only....Marymount Convent School! Or more commonly known as MCS for short. We created this blog, of course, for the IYOR 2008 competition, but we are also passionate about saving the reefs, and caring for the environment. After all, no one does things without a purpose. Funfact#1: More than half of the world's coral reefs will be damaged beyond repair by the year 2100 unless action is taken to halt the many threats they now face. Funfact#2: Calcium can be extracted from the coral exoskeleton. Funfact#3: Organic materials extracted from coral may be used as new anti-HIV medicine. Funfact#4: Coral reefs are among the oldest ecosystems on Earth. Funfact#5: Coral reefs are among the largest living structure on the planet. Funfact#6: Although coral reefs cover less than 1% of the Earth’s surface, they are home to 25% of all marine fish species. Funfact#7: 500 million people rely on coral reefs for their food and livelihoods.(Save reefs, save millions!!) Funfact#8: Without the existence of coral reefs, parts of Florida would be under water.(Save reefs, save Florida!!) Funfact#9: If the present rate of destruction continues, 70% of the world's coral reefs will be destroyed by the year 2050.
